Introduction

Hello and welcome to the Heaton Harriers website.

Heaton Harriers is one of the oldest running clubs in the North East. Formed in 1890, we have an illustrious past and a sound foundation for the future. We are a fairly large and very friendly club, and cater for members of all levels of fitness, ability and ambition. We welcome those looking to compete at a high level and those looking for fun and companionship in their bid for getting, and staying, fit.

The club is based at Whitley Park Sports Ground (Blue Flames) on the A191 Whitley Road, Benton, Newcastle upon Tyne, in between Four Lane Ends and Station Road Wallsend. The closest Metro station is Benton. [Location details]

[The rest of this page relates to the senior section of the club, but there is a separate page of information on the newly-developed Junior section.]

Our main training sessions takes place on Tuesday and Thursday. Members meet from around 6:45 for a 7pm start, the session lasting between an hour and an hour and a half. This will cover different aspects each week, i.e. Hills, Speed work, Intervals, etc. Each session is arranged to cater for a wide range of ability so no-one gets left behind.

In order to fit in comfortably with the main sessions, and to get maximum benefit from them, we recommend as a minimum you should be able to run/jog for at least 45 minutes. This should enable you to come along on any Tuesday or Thursday and join in. For runners who are not yet able to manage that, we have organised beginners' sessions from time to time subject to demand. These are aimed at helping runners build up to a level where they are able to join one of the main groups. Although there are no members currently requiring this, we will make sure that the first Tuesday training night of each month is suitable for beginners to join in and see how they get on.

Heaton Harriers organise several races throughout the year:

Jesmond Dene Series - 4 handicapped races held on Monday evenings during May, June and July over a multi-terrain course through Jesmond Dene.

Ladies Only Race - a very popular race held in July using the same multi-terrain course through Jesmond Dene.

Heaton Harriers Memorial Race - A multi-terrain or road race held each November to commemorate Memorial Sunday.

We also have club handicaps every two months and prizes are given at the Ringtons Cup race in April and the Christmas handicap.

We hold social events throughout the year - we organise coach parties to big local races such as the Dent Breweries Race and the Coastal Run. In 2000 we did a coast to coast relay run to celebrate the Millennium, and in 2001 we did a coast and castles run from Newcastle to Edinburgh.

Come training with us for up to a month without obligation whilst you decide whether to apply to be a club member. Subscription fee is currently £27, and for first-time members this includes a club vest. In subsequent years there is a discount for members who renew promptly. Subscriptions are for a calendar year, and to get the cheapest renewal price they need to be paid by the end of January. Anyone joining after the AGM in any year will get the whole of the following year included in their first payment. (The 2008 AGM was on October 15th.)

All runners are welcome to join Heaton Harriers - so whatever your speed, ability or fitness level, if you would like to know more please get in touch. Click for contact details, or take a look at our training schedule and come to one of our training nights. And although there is no obligation to join straight away, if and when you do decide to join, you can download a membership application form here (in PDF format).
