NEHL – Junior Cross Country Race Report from Aaron.

NEHL Race 1 – Wrekenton – Saturday Sept 29th

With a number of our regular runners unavailable for the first fixture of the season it was left to the under 11’s to fly the flag for the juniors at a dry but breezy Wrekenton course.

First up was Jackson Bennett in the under 11 boys race, finishing in 82nd place. A fine sprint down the home straight ensured Jackson just managed to clock under 9 minutes with a time of 8:59 for the 1.5k course.

Representing the girls for the day was Billie Slasor in the under 11 girls race. She ran an extremely well judged race, moving through the field on the second lap to finish in an excellent 17th position with a time of 7:12.

NEHL Race 2 – Druridge Bay – Sunday 7th October

It was great to see some new faces turning out for the club at Druridge Bay this weekend. All of our runners including the fresh faced newcomers ran well with a couple of standout performances.

One of our new faces, Alice McKenna, was first to run in the under 11 girls race. The rain showers and wind didn’t put Alice off as she finished a very respectable 45th position in a time of 8:02.

Next up for the club was the ever dependable Matthew Green in his first race since moving up to the Under15 boys category. Matthew covered the 3.3k course in 17:48 finishing in 59th position.

Daniel Hassan and Will Lievesley were next up in the under 13 boys race. Both were running the longer 3k plus distance for the first time since moving up from the under 11’s. Daniel was first home for the club with a great run, comfortably finishing in the top half of the field in 34th position in 15:19. Will put up a gutsy performance after missing the start and setting off with the fast pack 1 minute and 40 seconds behind the rest of the field. Despite this he bravely managed to pick off some of the slow pack runners to finish in 67th place in 17:55.

Last but not least were the under 13 girls Charlotte Hobbs and Rosie Swatman. Both girls put in fantastic performances which saw them contesting the lead well into the second half of the race. A few fast pack runners came through in the final stages as Charlotte eventually finished in a brilliant 5th place in 15:06 with Rosie only 3 places back in an impressive 8th position in 15:15. Both girls have now been promoted to the fast pack and will begin all their future races in the under13 category with a timed handicap.

The next race is nice and local at Gosforth Park on Saturday 27th October and it would be great to see some more new faces there.
