Saturdays Northern Athletics track and field event was the second meeting of the league. The first one in Darlington saw lovely sunny weather, albeit a tad windy, and as a joint team with Tynebridge Harriers we achieved 4th place. This Saturday’s weather was the complete opposite, with torrential rain at times, however that did not deter this hardy bunch as together we achieved 3rd team place at this meeting, moving us up into 3rd place in the league so far.
The Heaton squad consisted of George Routledge, Janette Kilgour , Lisa Boyd, Mark Banks, Richard Hogg, Helena Walsatar Lowes, and Ian Robinson and making their debut track and field performance – James Green, Caitlin Sowter, and Sarah Lemon.
Everyone from both clubs worked extremely hard and gave respectable performances, especially considering that a lot of the competitors were significantly younger!! Notable Heaton achievements were Sarah Lemon finishing 3rd in the 3000m, Ian Robinson finishing 2nd in steeplechase after leading most of the way, Richard Hogg finishing 2nd in the javelin, James Green being part of the men’s 400m relay team achieving first place, and Mark Banks winning the high jump.
The next meeting is on 13th July at Morpeth from 11.30am. We have some great athletes, achieving great things, however a lot of team points are accrued by having up to two competitors in all events, and it would be brilliant if we could build a good squad to take to each meeting.
